The Scala Theatre Museum, as part of the events for the birth centenary of the painter Salvatore Fiume (1915-1997) dedicates this exhibition (January 15 – April 20) to Fiume as set and costume designer for the Scala. Sketches and ten costumes designed by him for this theatre between 1952 and 1967, regarding operas like The Short Life by Manuel De Falla (1952), Medea by Luigi Cherubini (1953), Nabucco by Verdi (1958), and Wilhelm Tell by Rossini (1959) are on display.

The exhibition is enriched with a few paintings by Salvatore Fiume from the private collection of his children, Luciano and Laura. In them one can recognize architectural elements of his Islands of Statues and Cities of Statues transferred by him into his set designs for eight productions (six operas and two ballets) some of which are considered memorable like Cherubini’s Medea (1953), Bellini’s Norma (1955), and Verdi’s Nabucco (1958).

The exhibition also hosts four Fiume sketches (1992) for Bizet’s Carmen which never went into production. It should be noted that even in the paintings exhibited here, whose subjects are quite far from operatic themes, figures emerge from an imaginary stage in whose background architectures can be glimpsed, or even stand out, that can be found in most of Fiume’s pictorial production, which also inspired his set design.
