WOMAN AND BULL

Since 1957

The Woman and Bull subject, as well as that of the Woman and Cock marks the surfacing for the first time in Fiume’s painting of a thicker and more intense pictorial matter, as if the sensuality of the subject, until then unknown to his painting, also required a new and sensuous pictorial language. This theme was to appear also in some paintings of the Spanish cycle, like for example the Maya Desnuda. The strength and power of the bull, also a symbol of virility, was often a source of inspiration for Fiume’s drawings, sculptures, and architectural projects. For a few years, fascinated by the world of bullfighting, Fiume executed a series of paintings on that subject.
