THE JAPANESE CYCLE

Since 1967

Fiume’s first journey to Japan, particularly to Tokyo and Kyoto, dates back to 1967. There he was very impressed by the intensity and perfection of the Noh and the Kabuki theatres. On his return Fiume painted some works among which the Character of the Kabuki Theatre (1969), now kept in the Vatican Museums. The cycle called Japanese Poems, that Fiume carried out in 1989, was inspired from the classical iconography characterizing most figurative art of the Japanese tradition.
