SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS

In 1967 Fiume travelled to the Holy Land to follow the laying down of his large mosaic inside the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. The cycle of Susanna and the Elders originated from that journey and its most significant element is irony. In fact here the famous Susanna and the elders spying maliciously upon her are represented in a variety of poses and the draughtsman’s craft enters into service of an uninhibited expressive liberty fearless of even the most bizarre solutions.
