SCULPTURE

Sculpture is the protagonist of Fiume’s paintings known as Cities of Statues and Islands of Statues in that the architectures depicted in them are conceived as huge inhabitable sculptures. Yet, this is not the case when it comes to sculptures moulded in clay in which Fiume leaves out the architectural element in favour of the plastic component. Here his ideal masters are August Rodin, Arturo Martini, and Marino Marini. Also very important was his association with the great sculptor Giovanni Paganin, a close lifelong friend of his with whom he even carried out a number of sculptures “for four hands”. As a sculptor Fiume experimented various materials like wood, bronze, wire mesh, polyurethane foam, and fibreglass.
